What is Karma? (My Understanding)
Karma is not just about every action you do. It’s more about the intention behind your action. Like when you do something, what was going on in your mind at that time? What was your intention? That makes a big difference.
Normally, people say karma means “every action has a reaction or outcome.” That’s true, but behind every outcome, the intention also matters a lot. Before we take any action, we first get thoughts in our mind. Everything starts from our thoughts, and only then it becomes an action.
Let’s take an example.
Suppose a father hits his son.
Now, just looking at it simply hitting is an action. So we may say hitting is karma and it will have an outcome.
But the reason or intention behind why the father hit the son is what actually decides whether the karma is positive or negative.
At the moment the father raised his hand to hit, what was he thinking? What was his intention?
That’s what brings the actual result of karma not just the action itself.
Let me explain more:
1. Positive Intention:
Maybe the child was doing something wrong again and again, and the father, with love and concern, wanted to teach him a good lesson. He wanted his son to become better. So his intention was good, even if the action (hitting) looked bad.
2. Negative Intention:
Or maybe the father had a bad day at work, was stressed, and couldn’t control his anger. So he hit his son just to release his own frustration. That’s a selfish reason and a negative intention.
So in both cases, the action is same he hit his son.
But the intention behind it was different, and that’s what creates the real karma.
That’s why our thoughts before action are very important sometimes even more important than the action itself.
If we really want to understand karma properly, we must first understand our thoughts and intentions before doing anything.
Karma Logic Formula Example
Thoughts → Intention → Action → Outcome (Karma Result)
Karma = Intention Quality × Action Impact
Definitions:
- Thoughts: The inner ideas that come before doing anything.
- Intention Quality: Was the purpose behind the action selfish or selfless? Loving or angry?
- Action Impact: What kind of result did the action produce in the real world?
- Karma Result: What kind of energy (positive or negative) comes back to you.

Karma Calculator (Digital Logic Style)
Thought | Intention | Action | Result Type | Karma Score |
---|---|---|---|---|
Angry, selfish | To release frustration | Hit someone | Negative | -10 |
Loving, caring | To teach with concern | Hit someone | Balanced | +2 |
Clear, kind | To support/help | Gave advice | Positive | +10 |
You can create a simple karma score system based on intention level and action impact.
Note:
Karma is a philosophical and spiritual concept. The examples, logic, and flowchart presented here are only for visualization and understanding purposes based on personal reflection. This is not a scientific or fixed formula just a way to help you think deeper about your thoughts, intentions, and actions.
Simple Summary:
Karma is not just about what you do, but why you do it. Your intention and thoughts behind every action decide whether the karma is positive or negative. Every action starts from a thought, so understanding your mind before acting is the real key to understanding karma.
For example, if a father hits his son, it’s the intention behind the hit that defines the karma was it to guide the child, or to release his own anger? The same action can have different karmic results based on intention.
